<p>The unit was formed as the 512th Troop Carrier Wing at Reading MAP, PA in September 1949 with the C-46 and some trainer types. The wing moved to New Castle County Airport, DE in April 1951 until it was mobilized in March 1951. The 512th returned to Reserve control in November 1952, converted to the C-119 in 1957, and relocated to NAS Willow Grove, PA in July 1958. The wing transferred to Carswell AFB and was redesignated the 512th Air Transport Wing in January 1965 with the C-124 assigned. The 512th became a Military Airlift Wing in January 1966 and inactivated in June 1971. The unit was reformed as the 512th MAW (Associate) at Dover AFB in July 1973 providing Reservist personnel to operate front-line C-5A/Bs on a regular basis. The wing was the joint winner, with the 436th MAW, of the Mackay Trophy for 'the most meritorious flight of the year' for 1977. The Associate status was removed in October 1994.
